Discussion/Writing Post

This post is for everything that's not prompts, fills or comments on prompts/fills. You can discuss the movies or trailers or headcanons here, but you can also use this as a writing post: talk about fic ideas you've had (whether they're based on kinkmeme prompts or not), brainstorm with others, bounce ideas off someone, or post snippets you've written to get some feedback. Or even just some cheerleading and support while you write. You can also use this post to find a beta.

Basically: if it doesn't go on the prompt post, you can do it here.

Prompt post #1 is here. All non-DCEU prompts go here.

Writing in sections, or dropping all at once--what's your preference?

Hey fellow author-anons & reader-anons, just had a question about fills. If an author has written a fairly long-ish piece, do you prefer if they post it in sections or post it all at once? As an author, do you like to post in small sections so you can focus on the section you're writing, or do you like to get it all done in one go (if possible)? Does it change depending on what you're writing, or what your goals are?

Curious to know what other anons think!

As a reader, I'm kind of greedy and want everything at once, but I feel like I pay closer attention if I get the fic bit by bit. I also leave, overall, longer comments if I comment on every single section than if I leave one big comment on the entire fic.

For that same reason, as an author I prefer to post in sections. I find it motivating to get some feedback while I'm still writing the rest of the fic. But that only applies to plottier fic or other fics that lend themselves to chapters/sections. If I just write a PWP, I'll write it and post it in one.

I like to post in sections, because then I can put up the section as soon as I'm done with it, but I do like to write out of order and post it out of order, so I should probably stop. lol

As a reader, I don't really care, although with WIPs there's always a chance the fic will be abandoned, which is sad. Although I've never understood people who have a fully complete, edited and beta-d fic, who post in chapters. Would they actually change things based on feedback, or is it just for more pageviews? Seems a little pointless to me.

As a reader: depends on what you mean by long-ish? I certainly haven't minded the three- or four-part fills some anons have been posting all at once. It does make me less likely to comment on each part individually, I have to admit - just because I'm so selfish that I want to keep reading instead of stopping! /o\ But I also don't mind waiting for new parts of longer fills in the least.

As an author: I basically never have the whole thing written when I start posting, so, uh, it hasn't really come up. ;) If I did write a 2k- or 3k-word fill in one go, I probably would post it all at once. But anything longer than that, I'd plan, write, and post in parts - I like being able to incorporate feedback and make adjustments, I like writing to a schedule (even if it is self-imposed) ... and, tbh, I like the cheerleading. :D /o\ Getting anons' encouraging comments along the way is such a great feeling!

I like to post in parts while I'm still writing. This minimizes the possibility of me abandoning the fic. Also I'm a firm believer in "finished is better than perfect": if I didn't post in parts, I'd nitpick the wip to death and get sick of it = it would never see the light of day. And cheerleading is awesome obviously.
