It just made so much sense to me for Bruce to think the worst rather than let himself hope for anything, and in a continuity where the situation leading up to this is that a Kryptonian's body was taken and manipulated after death by a villain ... it suddenly seemed like it would be stranger if Bruce's mind didn't go there.
